What’s the best choice- Lumineers or veneers?

Posted on: September 16, 2016

Styles allow for people to choose the clothing that suits their feelings, personality and expressions. One aspect that some may have trouble changing is their smile. A smile may have stains, be crooked or be missing teeth that can ruin one’s self-esteem. Lumineers is a solution that not only saves the appearance but the functionality of the tooth.

What are veneers?

People may not be aware of the various methods available for one to correct his or her smile. Along with dental implants, people can use teeth whitening, veneers and bonding. Lumineers are an alternative to dental veneers and a great solution to produce a beautiful quality smile.

Veneers are a common form of a dental appliance, similar to Lumineers, that are “custom-made shells crafted of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front side of teeth,” mouthhealthy.org writes. People can use dental veneers almost like wearing a new outfit over one’s teeth and draw out their inner beauty with an amazing smile. While veneers may be the best solution for some, veneers are not necessarily for everyone.

Once the dental lab creates the veneers from a mold of the patient’s teeth, the dentist will apply the veneers to the teeth. Veneers will offer the chance for a perfect smile but come with a cost. It is important to note that, “Placing veneers is usually an irreversible process because it's necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from your tooth to accommodate the shell.”

Veneers can also limit what an individual eats or drinks, since “some foods and beverages that may stain or discolor your veneers such as coffee, tea or red wine,” mouthhealthy.org adds. With this in mind, a dentist will recommend if Lumineers are a possible option and the best choice, on a patient by patient basis.

What Lumineers can do

Lumineers are similar to veneers but have several other benefits than veneers. “Lumineers are digitally designed to be ultra-thin (about as thin as a contact lens), so they can be applied seamlessly over your teeth to deliver a natural looking smile,” Lumineers.com writes. Along with the fact that veneers tend to remove more of the tooth’s general structure, “Traditional veneers are generally thicker,” Lumineers.com adds.

Lumineers.com explains that Lumineers can solve a variety of dental issue, including:

  • Brighten stained and discolored teeth
  • Restore chipped teeth
  • Eliminate spacing and gaps
  • Align crooked teeth
  • Reshape small or misshapen teeth
  • Renew old dental work
  • Perfect a Hollywood smile

Fortunately, for the application process of Lumineers, patients only need to make two visits. Upon making the mold during the first visit, “there is typically no need for extensive drilling, shots or unsightly acrylic temporaries,” Lumineers.com explains. At the second visit, the dentist will make sure that the Lumineers fit before attaching them. Lumineers.com states that the “Teeth are then moderately etched to prepare for placement and then bonded one by one.” The etching is much less than the etching with veneers.

Above all else, the comfort of the patient during and after the procedure is the most important part. Thanks to how thin Lumineers are, the patient does not have to worry about excessive pain. If you or a loved one is considering Lumineers or other cosmetic dental work, schedule a consultation with a dentist and find the best procedure.
