With children, most parents realize that accidents are inevitable. When it comes to a child’s teeth, accidents can lead to permanent damage if left untreated. However, if a parent acts quickly enough, there is a strong chance that a dentist can help repair the cracked or chipped tooth.

Deal with the pain in the best way possible

Acting fast will help to repair any damage to a tooth and guarantee that the natural tooth can remain in the mouth. The American Association of Endodontists, AAE, notes that “The treatment and outcome for your tooth depends on the type, location, and extent of the crack.” Since each situation will be different, it is important to seek a dentist as soon as possible to assess and repair the damage.

While in some cases, the chipped tooth will not cause much pain, other situations can lead to an extremely uncomfortable situation. The AAE explains that a cracked or chipped tooth can include symptoms such as:

  • Erratic pain when chewing
  • Pain with the release of biting pressure
  • Pain when the tooth is exposed to temperature extremes

Fortunately, the advancements in dental technology make restoring a damaged tooth more probable than ever before. Repairing a chipped tooth, for example, is not half as complex as it may have been. “Most chipped teeth can be repaired either by reattaching the broken piece of tooth enamel or by bonding a tooth-colored filling,” the AAE explains.

Other procedures, such as a dental crown, can get expensive. With dental bonding, the cost is usually around $100 to $400 per tooth, depending on insurance. While the level of pain can vary per situation, a chipped or cracked tooth can continue to break even further over time. If left untreated, the child will struggle with the basic functions of eating, drinking and sometimes, even speaking. Dental bonding also has other uses, besides repairing a damaged tooth.

What else can dental bonding do?

Since a smile is normally the first thing people see upon greeting each other, proper dental hygiene is the best way to guarantee a pleasant and bright smile. Patients, who wish to enhance or alter their smile, have a variety of options to choose from; this includes dental bonding.

Colgate.com explains that “Bonding is the application of a tooth-colored composite resin (plastic) to repair a decayed, chipped, fractured, discolored tooth.” Not only useful in repairing damage, dental bonding is useful in making, “teeth appear longer, and as a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings.” If a patient has a gap between the teeth that is catching plaque or food in it, then dental bonding can help close the gap.

Mouthhealthy.org brings up the fact that in the cases with dental bonding, “the natural tooth enamel is then fused together with bonding materials such as porcelain and resins to create a strong structure that still feels like your original tooth.” By using dental bonding, the child will not be able to tell that much work was done in the first place.

While children are usually in the process of gaining all their adult teeth, it is important to take care of the baby teeth as well. A baby tooth that is damaged or falls out prematurely can lead to a variety of issues for the child. By setting up a dental visit, the parent can ensure the child receives the best level of care necessary for their child’s oral health.

If you or your child has chipped, damaged or cracked a tooth, do not hesitate to call a dentist and ask about dental bonding. If the cosmetic aspect of dental bonding is of interest to you or your loved one, do not hesitate to schedule a consultation and go over the details.
