Dental Fillings: 4 Things to Watch Out For

Posted on: March 17, 2019

Dental fillings have been around for ages as they are a great method of restoration for teeth that have been minorly decayed or chipped. The procedure itself is simple and can allow a person to chew naturally and smile confidently again.

While dental fillings can offer a person restoration initially, there are some things that might come up later on, that could indicate a problem. Being aware of what to watch out for could be helpful if and when a problem arises.

In this article, we will discuss four things to watch out for when it comes to dental fillings

What to watch out for with dental fillings

Pain

Typically, a person receives a dental filling in order to help relieve pain that may have been brought on by a cavity or a chip. A filling is used to help restore the damaged parts of a tooth so that a person can feel normal again.

However, if a person experiences may after the dental filling is placed then it may indicate that there is a deeper problem. Initially, after the procedure, there may be some discomfort but if a person is feeling pain after 24 hours of the procedure, then it’s best to get back to the dentist to have them take a closer look.

Sensitivity

It’s important to be aware of any sensitivity that a person feels after their dental filling is placed. This sensitivity may occur when someone eats or drinks cold or hot things. Immediately after the dental filling procedure, some sensitivity may be normal. However, if 24 hours have passed and sensitivity is still occurring then the person should go back to their dentist to have the tooth examined.

Sensitivity may indicate that the tooth is more damaged than the dentist thought. Or, it may be as simple as enamel wear which can be treated with fluoride or a rinse.

Sharp edges

When a person needs a dental filling, the dentist will remove decayed parts of the tooth before placing the filling. During removal, a drill or laser is typically used and then the filling material is placed.

Occasionally, after the procedure, a person may feel sharp edges that weren’t smoothed out or completely filled. It’s important to watch out for these as they could cut the tongue or inner cheek.

The dentist can repair the sharp edge by smoothing it out or filling it further.

Soft spots

Sometimes, a dental filling isn’t strong enough to fill the tooth. It can be helpful to watch out for any soft spots on the tooth. When a person bites down or chews food using the filled tooth, they may feel like the food isn’t being ground but rather sinking into the tooth. This indicates that the dental filling has failed and a dentist needs to repair it further.

The bottom line

Dental fillings can provide a great deal of restoration but just like with any other dental procedure, there can always be problems. Watching out for the signs that were laid out in this article can be helpful to someone who feels as though their dental filling is failing.
