If you have a chipped tooth, the good news is that it is not hard to repair. In fact, you have several options to choose from. You might get a crown or dental bonding. Keep reading to find out more about repairing chipped teeth.

About chipped teeth

The enamel that covers the teeth is mineralized and very hard. But it does have its limits. Having a blow to the face or falling can cause the tooth to break. That is even more true if there is already some decay in the area. Luckily, the dentist has several options for patients.

Dental bonding

If only a small piece has chipped off the enamel, the dentist might be able to use a filling. If the damage is in the front, then bonding might be done. This involves using composite resin in the same color as the teeth. It is a simple procedure and usually does not involve numbing the area.

Dental crown

If a bigger part of the tooth breaks off, then a crown might be needed. The dentist will file down part of the tooth and put a crown over it. This is a cap that looks like a tooth, and it can protect the tooth. It can also make it look more attractive.

The crown might be made from ceramic, resin, or metal. Different crowns come with different advantages. An all-metal crown is strong. But a porcelain crown can be more natural-looking. A crown is often used with a root canal treatment.

Dental veneers

If the front tooth has a chip, then a veneer can be an aesthetic option to cover the tooth. It can make it look healthy again. The veneer is a shell that is the same color as the tooth. It covers the front and has a thicker portion where the tooth is broken.

The dentist will remove around 0.3 to 1.2 millimeters from the surface of the tooth. Then an impression will be taken and sent to a lab. Once it is ready, the patient will come back to have it put on. The dentist will roughen the surface of the tooth and add dental cement. The veneer will then be attached. A light will be used to activate it.

Root canals

If a tooth has a big enough chip that exposes the pulp, then a root canal might be necessary. This is the area that has blood vessels and nerves. Bacteria can enter the area and infect the center. If the tooth changes color or is sensitive, then the pulp might be damaged. If this pulp is not removed, then the tooth might be infected and need an extraction.
