5 Tips to Make Your Dentures Last

Posted on: March 7, 2019

Properly cared for dentures typically last five to eight years, and in some cases, even longer. Find out what you need to do to make your dentures last. These tips are easy to follow, so get started today.

1. Keep the dentures clean

Dentures might be artificial teeth, but they can get a plaque buildup just like natural teeth. Dentures need to be cleaned every day to remove bacteria and to prevent plaque from forming.

How to clean dentures

Use denture cleaning tablets to clean the dentures every night. Also, submerge the dentures in a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar. This will remove any odors. Make sure the water is not too hot as that can harm the dentures.

2. Store the dentures properly

Proper storage is also necessary for making dentures last. Use a storage case for the dentures. Dentists usually provide these cases when fitting patients for dentures, and they protect the artificial teeth when they are not worn.

3. Follow proper protocol for removing dentures

It is easy to get complacent when removing dentures, but that could cause them to break. Follow some steps every time to protect the device.

Use water and a towel

Fill the sink with warm water and put down a towel. This will protect the dentures if dropped when being taken out.

Take the dentures out carefully

Once the towel and water are in place, stand over the sink and remove the dentures. Start with the top denture. Place a thumb on the inside of the front teeth and push up and out to slide the dentures out.

Then, move to the lower denture. Pull it out by using a slow rocking motion.

Do not force the dentures. It should be easy to remove them when using this technique.

4. Wear dentures daily

It is important to wear dentures every single day. Failure to do so could cause the dentures to become ill-fitting. If they are too loose or too tight, it will be hard to eat and talk. Also, ill-fitting dentures rub against the gums, making the wearer quite uncomfortable.

Take them out at night

While people need to wear their dentures every day, they also need to take them out at night. This gives the gums a chance to relax.

5. Use the dentures properly

Do not make the mistake of using dentures to open packages, as that can dislodge the replacement teeth. Also, avoid sticky foods. This can also cause the teeth to fall out.

In addition, corn on the cob and steak can both make dentures unstable.

As a general rule, avoid foods that are not easily chewed with dentures.

Make dentures last

These tips will help you make your dentures last. Keep your dentures clean, store them in a case, be careful when taking them out, wear them daily and eat the right foods. Also, keep your regularly scheduled dental appointments, so your dentist can make sure the dentures fit properly.
